The NORM Awareness Training Course is suitable for those working in the Oil & Gas sector and other industries where Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material (NORM) is present.

The NORM Awareness training course is designed to provide delegates with an understanding of the hazards and legislative requirements on working with NORM.

Course Structure

This is a classroom-based course, taught over one working day at the Scotoil Training Facility in Aberdeen using a mixture of lectures, desktop exercises and practical experience. Each course can accommodate up to a maximum of 10 delegates.

The course is provided by Scotoil’s own experienced personnel, all whom have many years of experience in providing radiation detection services for radioactive materials that are used or are commonly encountered, particularly in the Oil and Gas Industry.

The Course content is covered by three separate training modules as follows:

Knowledge Learning - What is NORM?  Where is it found?  The hazards of NORM, The Ionising Radiations Regulations 2017 (IRR2017), The Environmental Authorisations (Scotland) Regulations 2018.

Practical - Introduction to radiation monitoring, selection and use of radiation monitors and identifying NORM. The practical element of the course involves delegates having to determine if NORM contamination is present within components/equipment. This ‘hands on’ approach means delegates will be confident when faced with a real scenario within their own workplace.

Understanding Analytical data - Is the material radioactive, exempt or out of scope?

Training Certification

Delegates who have attended, successfully completed and passed the course shall be awarded a Certificate along with a training card. The Certificate & Card shall show the issue date and an expiry date. Delegates are encouraged to renew their training every 3 years to keep up with changes to legislation, monitoring equipment and industry practices.

Scotoil Services have over 40 years of experience in working with NORM (Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material) from the Oil & Gas Industry and are a market leader in this sector. This extensive experience and knowledge has been used to build a Training Course that covers not only the theoretical aspects of NORM Awareness but also gives delegates the first-hand experience of getting a monitor in their hands and actually learning to identify NORM through a series of practical challenges.
